CNN & Congress on “Buy American”

“Buy American” these days refers to language in the national economic stimulus package. It seems to me that Congress is really politicizing this issue, because the concept of buying American sure seems like a no-brainer on the surface. But in truth, the consequences of a national requirement to for the government to buy American could be bad for the economy, even if it doesn’t violate laws and treaties re: trade we have with other countries. The point is, if anybody should stand behind the idea of buying American it should be me. But still I’m skeptical. This video at CNN sure makes me realize how complex the issue is. And though I’m liberal, I continue to be impressed with Senator McCain for standing up for what he believes to be right; he was the single voice who said the Buy American language should be stricken from the amendment. He gets it (in as much as I get what getting it is). If we make laws about not buying other countries’ stuff, those countries will reciprocate. And that loss of buying power could/would be worse than the cure of buying American.
