Made In The U.S.A.

Made in New York City

Photographer Richard Perry recently published a multimedia series of photographs, along with text and an audio dialogue, in slideshow form at the New York Times’ Lens blog. The work is all about companies who run factories in New York City. More specifically, it’s about the work itself. The making. The stuff.

Interestingly, some manufacturers were hesitant to allow their facilities to be photographed because of concerns that their approaches could be emulated, and the work knocked off cheaply overseas.

As the photographer says, it’s all about finding “little bits of beauty and elegance in the objects themselves.” Which is easier to do with things that are clearly made with care.
